  15. There is no need to panic over the current virus situation. However, you
  16.  
  17. should take the problem seriously. Using VirusScan, it only takes a few
  18.  
  19. minutes per week to effectively protect your Macintosh against the known
  20.  
  21. viruses.
  22.  
  23. 
  24.  
  25. ‚Ä¢ If you do nothing else, religiously use the VirusScan Extension. It only
  26.  
  27. takes a minute to install and it can save you much grief.
  28.  
  29. 
  30.  
  31. ‚Ä¢ Keep original software on locked floppies. Use copies. When you obtain a
  32.  
  33. new piece of software, immediately lock the disk on which it came, make
  34.  
  35. a copy, and use the copy. Never unlock the original disk. It is impossible
  36.  
  37. for a virus to infect files on a locked floppy.
  38.  
  39. 
  40.  
  41. ‚Ä¢ Make periodic backups of your hard drive, at least once per week.
  42.  
  43. 
  44.  
  45. ‚Ä¢ Keep your anti-viral software up-to-date. This is very important. Old
  46.  
  47. versions of anti-viral software are very often ineffective against new
  48.  
  49. viruses. This is particularly true of VirusScan, which only protects
  50.  
  51. against known viruses and makes no attempt to detect new viruses.
  52.

  55. For most people, this is all you have to do to protect your personal
  56.  
  57. Macintosh. It is not necessary to scan all new software before using it or
  58.  
  59. to scan all floppy disks before using them. This is a waste of time. As long
  60.  
  61. as you have the VirusScan Extension properly installed, it will detect and
  62.  
  63. block viruses before they can spread or cause any damage.

  67. It is also not necessary to scan your hard drives frequently. Let the
  68.  
  69. VirusScan Extension do its job and trust it.

  73. You should, however, periodically do a full scan of all your hard drives
  74.  
  75. just to make certain that they are still uninfected. For example, if you
  76.  
  77. start up from a floppy disk which does not have the VirusScan Extension
  78.  
  79. installed, it is possible for a virus to infect your hard drives. Doing a scan
  80.  
  81. every once in a while will detect any such infections.

  85. One strategy which many people use is to do a full scan just before every
  86.  
  87. backup. This has the added advantage that it makes certain your backups
  88.  
  89. are clean.

  95. The remaining recommendations are for people who manage Mac

  97. networks, Mac laboratories, Mac bulletin boards, or collections of public
  98.  
  99. domain and shareware software. An environment where many people
  100.  
  101. share Macs, or share a Mac network, is a perfect breeding ground for
  102.  
  103. viruses. People who sell software also have a special responsibility to
  104.  
  105. make certain that their software is free from infection.

  109. ‚Ä¢ Install the VirusScan Extension on all your lab startup disks.
  110.

  115. ‚Ä¢ Check all your lab disks frequently with VirusScan to make certain that
  116.  
  117. they are uninfected. Also check to make certain that the VirusScan
  118.  
  119. Extension is still installed and active on all your startup disks. We have
  120.  
  121. discovered that students love to play with the start-up disks.

  125. ‚Ä¢ Educate the people in your organization about viruses and how to protect
  126.  
  127. against them. Give them copies of VirusScan and teach them how to use
  128.  
  129. the application. Distribute printed copies of the VirusScan manual.
  130.

  133. ‚Ä¢ Try to put software in write-protected folders on AppleShare server
  134.  
  135. disks. Viruses cannot infect applications if they are in folders which do
  136.  
  137. not have the ‚ÄúMake Changes‚Äù privilege. On the other hand, if an
  138.  
  139. application is in a writable server folder, any infected Mac on the
  140.  
  141. network which accesses the disk and uses the application might spread the
  142.  
  143. infection to the application on the server. If it is a popular application, it
  144.  
  145. will in turn quickly infect any other Macs on the network which are not
  146.  
  147. protected by a VirusScan Extension. This is one way in which viruses can
  148.  
  149. spread very rapidly. Since some applications insist on writing to their
  150.  
  151. own file or folder, it is not always possible to put applications in
  152.  
  153. write-protected folders, but you should make every attempt to do this
  154.  
  155. when it is possible.

  159. ‚Ä¢ Check server disks frequently with VirusScan to make certain they are
  160.  
  161. uninfected. For best results, you should take the server out of production
  162.  
  163. and restart it using your Virus Tools or emergency startup disk. This is
  164.  
  165. the only way to guarantee that VirusScan will be able to scan all the files
  166.  
  167. on the server disk. For more details on scanning servers, see the

  173. ‚Ä¢ Check all new software with VirusScan before installing it on a server.

  177. ‚Ä¢ Back up your servers frequently. Run VirusScan just before each

  183. ‚Ä¢ The WDEF virus can cause serious performance problems if it infects an

  185. AppleShare server. To avoid these problems, administrators should never

  187. grant the ‚Äúmake changes‚Äù privilege on server root directories. We also

  189. recommend deleting the Desktop file if it exists. See the section about the

  195. ‚Ä¢ Bulletin board operators and other people who maintain and distribute
  196.  
  197. public domain and shareware software have a special responsibility to the

  199. Mac community. Please carefully test all new software before
  200.  
  201. distributing it. You should also, of course, run VirusScan on all new
  202.  
  203. software you receive.

  209. before sending them out to be duplicated and distributed.
